YG sees stars with conglomerates

Posted by on July 16, 2012

The announcement two weeks ago of YG Entertainment collaborating with Cheil Industries on a fashion joint venture created a buzz.

It was an unprecedented tie-up between one of the major arms of Samsung Group and Korea’s second-largest entertainment agency. Analysts were quick to point out that Lee Seo-hyun, second daughter of Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee, leads the luxury goods and fashion division of the affiliate.

That day, YG’s share price jumped 5.1 percent.

YG and Cheil will establish a joint venture to roll out a fashion brand next year that targets the global market, said the press release from both companies on June 29. They have yet to decide on further details such as the size of the joint venture, brand name or concept.

“Fashion and music are inseparable,” said a spokesman for Cheil Industries. “Singers are supposed to be fashionable and some fashion brands originate from musical genres such as hip-hop. We have been in a close business relationship thus far with YG, using its artists such as T.O.P. and G-Dragon from the boy band Big Bang as models for some of our brands. Although we could have chosen SM Entertainment and JYP [for the joint venture], we opted for YG because we highly appreciate its creative power.”

The spokesman stressed that the partnership won’t take advantage of the popularity of YG artists.

“It’s a deal to merge our strength in fashion and YG’s leadership in youth culture,” he said.

“Samsung seems convinced of YG’s competence as a creative content provider,” said Jin Hong-goock, an analyst with Hyundai Securities. “For YG, there is nothing to lose from a business tie-up with Cheil - whether it gets involved in the design or its artists model the goods. If the clothes from the joint venture sell well, the profits will go to YG, and even if they don’t, YG won’t need to pay for the loss.”

Last Friday, YG went so far as to announce a sponsorship from global tech giant Samsung Electronics. BigBang is having a year-long global concert tour of 25 cities from Asia to the Americas and Europe under the “Bigbang Alive Galaxy Tour 2012” title.

This is the first time a tour of a K-pop singer or band will include the name of a product from Samsung. The product is Galaxy, the flagship brand of Samsung’s smart mobile products, including smartphones and tablet PCs that account for more than 70 percent of Samsung Electronic’s profit.

An industry source who spoke under the condition of anonymity said YG probably received several billion won from Samsung.

“We think the sponsorship was an opportunity for both Galaxy and BigBang to effectively promote the brands,” said a Samsung spokesman. “That the event combines smartphones and music, the key elements of life for the younger generation around the world, makes a crucial point.”

YG was established in 1996 by Yang Hyun-suk, one of three members of the popular 1990s trio, Seo Taiji & Boys. With hip hop as its musical identity, the Mapo, western Seoul-based agency has produced and managed dozens of entertainers including musicians such as Big Bang, 2NE1, Se7en and Psy, and actresses like Kang Hye-jung, the tortured heroine in Park Chan-wook’s 2003 incest-themed film “Old Boy.”

Thanks to its internal culture, which is reputed to appreciate the free spirit and personality of their artists more than its rival firms, YG’s entertainers aren’t caught in the typical K-pop mold of being sexy or cute. They have emerged as icons of unique and trendy styles.

“YG has been getting obvious attention in overseas markets including Japan on the back of its strong lineup of competent artists,” said Chung Woo-chul, an analyst with Mirae Asset Securities.

For instance, 2NE1, the four-member girl group, has been receiving stage outfit support from U.S. fashion designer Jeremy Scott, while will.i.am of American band the Black Eyed Peas has served as their musical patron, producing and composing some of their works.

An entertainment agency going corporate as such is rare in this country. Most of the profitable businesses of entertainment companies, aside from their talent, is in fields like restaurants and cafe franchises.

JYP, with girl groups such as Wonder Girls and Miss A, has been running a Korean restaurant in Manhattan since March. SM Entertainment in April formed a joint restaurant venture, SM Kraze, with burger chain Kraze International. Formerly known as sidus HQ, iHQ, which manages actress Han Ye-seul and actor Jo In-sung, established a strategic partnership with cafe chain Caffe Bene in 2008, contributing to its massive expansion across the country.

YG is outspoken about its open-mindedness about business opportunities. “We are pretty much open to every industrial field for synergy and we always pursue something new,” said a spokeswoman for YG.

With nearly 200 employees, a four-fold increase from the end of 2009, the firm listed on the Kosdaq in November last year. Yang is the top shareholder with a 36 percent stake in the firm, which has a market capitalization of 491.2 billion won ($427 million). Its share price has surged 40 percent in the past eight months to close at 47,600 won last Friday.

With YG’s entry into the Kosdaq, all of Korea’s top three agencies are now listed on the secondary stock market, increasingly luring investors’ attention to the so-called entertainment category and giving birth to analysts specializing in that field.

SM Entertainment, the nation’s largest, manages Girls’ Generation, Super Junior and F(x). Listed in 2000, it became the first company in the industry to be listed on the market. It ranks seventh on the Kosdaq in terms of market cap at 1.04 trillion won. No. 3 player JYP has a market cap of 106.5 billion won and was listed on the Kosdaq in late 2010. YG also opened a store on eBay Korea earlier in June to sell CDs as well as souvenirs including photo books, T-shirts and cell phone accessories representing YG and its artists. Last year the agency launched a joint record label with Avex Group, Japan’s leading entertainment firm, and set up YG Asia, an Asian headquarters in Hong Kong.

A month ago, YG started a joint project with Hyundai Card, Korea’s second-largest credit card issuer, which has gained a reputation as an icon of hipness and creativity due to a series of cultural projects it has brought to Korea in recent years. They include Hyundai Card Super Concert series, which has invited a slew of top-notch musicians ranging from Sting to Stevie Wonder, Lady Gaga and Eminem, who is set to perform in Seoul on Aug. 19.

Through a project dubbed “Re-Monster, ” YG aims to discover talented yet obscure musicians. They will submit their own interpretation of Big Bang’s latest single “Monster,” and YG’s key music producers, and will introduce those covers on Hyundai Card’s Music, a Web site for music.

add Galaxy on the name of Big Bang concert n they said that they won't take advantage of the popularity of YG artists? wth! although i like it when YG'll have more money but let Big Bang concert is the true music concert, plz don't use it to promote any brand. Look at the poster, it's more like an advertising poster, it looks just so lame, i think YG is too ambitious on earning money :(

    • Timea B

I don't really like Bigbang going so commercial, either. It's like YG is losing the focus on artistry towards commerce and money-making. I hope the next step is not going to be the mass production of corporate sponsored idol starlets, stepping onto the SM road....

      • dodo18

honestly as much i love bigbang i think lately yg is too obsessed in becoming bigger than sm , that he is ready to do anything for money. have you seen billion stuff he is releasing lately , ven making of are being release separately than the dvd concert, he release six version sm style . all this scream i'm ready to do anything for money just to beat sm. but bigbang are grown up men we should not worry about them. if they were not happy with yg they would not resign with him

      • Aimee

You're probably a kid who doesn't understand much about business but all these partnerships are actually WIN-WIN for YG, the companies and us fans. Without the money, YG won't be able to produce high-quality music videos (which in return promote their artists) and other things.

BIGBANG has always been commercial. They were created as idols, if you remember. But because of the money they get from these endorsements, they are able to upgrade themselves through producing their own music, buying high-end fashion stuff and working with other people.

This is the kind of stuff small companies aspire. I don't get why fans complain on stuff like this.

        • NaToTheWak

I graduated from a business school and I agree with Timea B. No need to call immature people who disagree with you. In one year, Big Bang shot 24 CFs and only 4 MVs. There is something wrong there. Music is not a regular product, it's not "the most money involved, the better the music is". It's not as if money would make their music better. Talent does. Of course the company and themselves need money, of course they have to endorse a brand from time to time, but now it's becoming their main activity. It's a pity.

          • Timea B

Absolutely right. Also, no one expects companies to spend millions of dollars on a single MV. You can make marvellous MVs without spending zillions on special effects and Dolce&Gabbana suits. it's not the money that will make music better, agreed with NaToTheWak. Also, look at the Alive tour ticket pricing. It's like they must be throwing gold stones during the concert instead of confetti, because these tickets are at the level (or even passes) a Gaga or a Madonna concert's.

        • Timea B

No I am not a kid, can we bet I am older than you? :) And I also bet I worked longer in business environment than most of you kids here. :))) I understand the reasons why they do this, I just don't like it, that's it. It all screams "we work for moooneeeey". Of course they do, everyone does, but these CFs make it all the more obvious, kind of into your face style. And YG is not a small company. The cafe next door is a small company, YG has over 100 employees.

    • Aimee

Well, this is how they can make more creative stuff. With more money, they can do more things like those expensive music videos YG is always bragging about. (Example: There probably would've been no Monster MV without the Hyundai partnership.) As the article says, it's really WIN-WIN. YG gets money, the brands get promoted and us fans have more stuff to enjoy.

It's not about being too ambitious on earning money, it's just growing big and running the business more efficiently.

You think GD or TOP can buy their expensive fashion stuff without these endorsements? Don't think so.

      • NaToTheWak

There would have been Monster MV without Hyundai. YG has always been able to produce very good quality music videos without the help of big companies. Honestly, what makes Monster good is the song, the expressions, the hairstyles, not the expansive stuff and the explosions! Same goes for fashion: the most expansive accessories are not the best looking. I think YG could be just as good with less money. YG artists are amazing because they are creative and talented, not because they can afford expansive clothes and special effects.

        • Bvip

Right. Bigbang has been always great with their performance and music without the help of big money or big company's sponsorship.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that sponsorship is always bad thing. I'm worried about bigbang getting a product obviously for YG. I mean, just one of the items for YG and later YG, the brand is getting much more important.
These days, YG getting obsessed with stages with big money. But we know sometimes simple is great. The outline of stage for this alive world tour is very simple compared with stages of big shows (2009,2010,2011). The stage is enough for them to perform and show their ability to fans in the world. Because they're talented enough. They don't have to change clothes every time they sing a song. In this alive tour, they don't change clothes often.
Fancy, splendid things are not always neccessary for their success in the future. Many music videos of hit songs like Lie, HaruHaru, Last farewell, Tonight (+solo mv, unit mv) etc were popular because the songs were good enuogh. Not becasue of YG always investing much money on their music videos. Monster is also loved because the song is good and lyrics as well.
i know bigbang is getiing bigger and bigger, and we'll be happy to see some stuff related to bigbang with great amount of money poured in it. for example, their mv, their outfit and their stage etc
But that doesn't mean that those kind of things are neccessary for their success.
And buying accessories or clothes? They cost them if they want to buy. They have been buying stuffs even before the company started to be on the stock market. It was possible because bigbang has been making great money especially since 2009. They have enough money to buy them.
YG like to expand it's brand because the company need more and more money for running the business, building 2nd YG in another country, to be the no.1 in the entertainment field in Korea and for making rookies. Not for bigbang's accessory things or stage, music video things.

    • LuvTABI4ever

but when you come to think of it.... bigbang needs a lot of money to be fashionable and stylish, isn't it? i agree on the point that i dun like BB to be to commercialize but YG never treat his artist bad in a way of earning, look at their luxury brand fashion. even SM earns a lot but their artists are not as luxury as BB and 2ne1, at least they are well earned too. so, i understand y YG needs those sponsorship. it's hard....

    • Bbhangover

WTF then don't watch the concert. Can't u just be thankful that samsung sponsored Alive Tour to make it better? And YG NEEDS to earn money so he can sustain our boys' promotions -.- common sense pls

      • guest

YG need much more money to make rookies, to build 2nd YG building in another countries... our boy's promotions? oh dear, there is already enough money bigbang have earned since 2008 or 2009.
This year, especially, the amount of money bigbang will make in Japan is great. You think it's for bigbang promotion next album only?
Sadly, there are many mouths in the house but the family members making great money is a few. The parents like to build big houses more and give birth more and more. brothers and sisters... then what should Bigbang do? They got to work damn hard. Do you think they work hard for their school fee and their clothes only? They don't have to do that hard if only for their school fee and clothes. They already earned money enough.
I'm saying about the reason why bigbang working 'harder and harder'.

    • fantasticelastic

      Look at it this way:
In exchange for seeing those galaxy phones at the bottom of the poster, fans are getting cheaper tickets and YG is having to worry less about profits AND YG's getting more money in it's bank (which means Big Bang is getting paid more too). A world tour is very expensive and extremely risky if you're not Lady Gaga. SM town actually made losses financially the first 2 concerts they had in L.A. If YG didn't have a sponsor, they'd probably be really worried because the company could potentially go through HUGE losses. Us fans would also end up having to pay really high prices for a really low budget less-organized concert.. or we might not get a concert tour at all. YG, Big Bang, and VIPs are actually getting a lot MORE advantages by promoting Samsung.

Also I've noticed as a fan that even though YG is really ambitious with earning money, he often re-invests it into YG and YG artists. YG fans get better music videos, higher budget concerts, better stages etc. In some way, fans do benefit when YG makes money. YG also uses the money to hire more famous choreographers (Laurianne Gibson), a competent stage production crew (Live Nation), better directors for MVs, and just more talented personnel. To me this shows that YG really respect Big Bang enough to give them the best crew to work with so that they can achieve a better overall picture. I feel like YG really uses profits to make YG and Big Bang into a stronger brand.

" Bigbang Alive Galaxy Tour 2012......This is the first time a tour of a K-pop singer or band will include the name of a product from Samsung."

Samsung, which is #6 as the most valuable global brand, chose to work with another "going global" brand in music: Big Bang..
Sounds so $$$$$$ lucrative for Big Bang, YG and Samsung.

  • topforever91

I'm happy for Big Bang!!! :) Yes its true that YG is becoming more commercial, but Big Bang has been around for six years. Maybe if you think about it that way, it's about time they expand their outreach. But regardless, I do hope YG doesn't milk them dry, poor things work so hard!

  • Sam Best

anyone else notice GD is waaay shorter than the other members in their tour poster? lol

I freakin' want a Galaxy phone... It's so cute and big! I saw it in a recent kd and I liked it. It's so cool that BIGBANG is working with Samsung Galaxy... This just gives me all the more reason to buy the phone! ^__^ Well whatever YG does, I just hope he remembers that BIGBANG are singers and humans.

  • BVIP

money money monet.. yeah..it feels like bigbang getting to be a kind of product. can't help it. even though they say we're not product.
btw, i just feel little bit bad.
why the editor didn't write about bidbang's profits and lots of career?
bigbang makes money a lot for YG. they're damn working hard this year.(actually since they debut in 2006)
The other YG artists haven't got popularity from Japan yet. The only artist in YG who is going to have a dome concert in Japan is bigbang. The only artist who ranked on billboard chart (korean album) without promotion is bigbang as well. The partner who samsung chose is bigbang 'bigbang galaxy world tour'.
The artists who were models of Cheil were bigbang (GD,TOP). The most well known singers in korea as fashionista is GD(CNN, Singapore magazine etc), And the items that bigbang has or wore sold out often as you know.
But in the article, as always, no detalis of bigbang's career or their effects. reporters always busy with describing other yg artists' works, even not happened yet.
And Chei says that they won't take adventage of artist's popularity? really? Though they don't want it, the popularity of artists effects on the sales definitely. They know it very well.
i just hope that they be honest.
    Because saying is always easy.

    • http://twitter.com/bigbangmm Mouna Youssouf

srsly u should not feel bad about this. cuz big bang are just doing good with Yg. He knows what he is doing... and he is far from " using them for money"... NO OFFEnCE AT ALL !

    • http://hibiki890.tumblr.com/ hibiki♕

Well this isn't any different from BB's other CF deals. They are being used to promote Gmarket, Fila, North Face etc., Companies are signing deals with them for their popularity. If they're not popular then why would the company sign deals with them? More CF deals means BB is trusted & are doing good with their careers.

Samsung sponsoring BB's tour means YG & BB don't have to use their own money to pay for venue, equipment, stylists, dancers etc., YG & BB are making money from the concerts using Samsung & other sponsors money~

      So it's a Win-Win noh?

  • mizskullzzz

as long as it gives benefits to my boyz, i won't mind d collab ;D

  • florizza

I'm proud of YG for expanding his business ventures. I honestly don't see how it's a bad thing to expand and use the popularity of BigBang for promotion. Samsung is smart for sponsoring them since they've become so big. Also, the win-win situation makes it that much more appealing in a business standpoint. The money would go a long way for YG Family so let's not take this as such a negative thing.

  • topalltheway

actually, many international artists are sponsored by big brand firms throughout their world tours. the principle is, as long as big bang and other yg artists are free to do their own creative music and not being hindered by the load of those yg money-making promotion work and activities, the above said business collboration is fine. of course, yg artists should be enjoying some share from the benefits made in the end !

  • sheamingo

People don't seem to understand that it takes money to make money. And at the end of the day, YGEntertainment is a business, not a charity and BIGBANG works for YGEntertainment, not the other way around. If not for Yang Goon's business sense, BIGBANG probably would not be where they are today. So let's stop this BIGBANG being used stuff, it makes absolutely no sense.

    • mek0

agreed. it also is a win-win situation. i know there's some people worried that bigbang is working too hard or whatever along those lines, but lets be real. all 5 members knew exactly what they're doing once they signed that contract..as long as yg still lets his artist do their own creative thinking in music (which is what they love to do) and no member is complaining, then i wont either.

      • Bvipjk

They can not complain about company through interview, media, if you expect that if they had complaints, then they would do it. it's so..... well.. it's not simple thing that way.

        • mek0

well ofcourse haha. what i'm trying to get at is, if there was a huge issue then they would probably up and leave yg. but most, if not all, issues have a solution. im pretty sure there is a bit complaining here and there (from both parties), it is only natural, but i highly doubt anything extreme...honestly, none of us knows what goes on behind those doors. so every one of us could be entirely wrong.

      • sheamingo

That's why I think YG is perfect for them, he gives them creative freedom. I mean SeungRi pratically did all the work for his album himself. And look at G with his album, what other company is going to let them do that? At the end of the day, I really believe he cares about them. Plus, who was going to take them in the beginning, since by idol standards people thought they were ugly? I personally think they are handsome, even if they are not pretty boys like some idols. But I bet now that YG gave them a chance and other companies see what they can do, I bet they would definitely take them now, looks or not.

    • Bvipjk

I would agree with you if Yang Goon composed and arranged songs for bigbang's music career like JYP. and if he was resonsible for it all like JYP. or if he really have a good sense of business like SM. But i don't think Yang Goon is like them. He doesn't or he can't that kind of thing anyway,
What i'd like to say is that bigbang has been working really hard since they debuted in 2006, And they have been making great amount of money. Over half of the money goes to the company.
YG has bad relationship with some broadcast station and soem press. i don't think Yang Goon's business sense is good. If his business sense was that good, bigbang wasn't attacted by media that way. And if you think his business sense made bigbang today, then what do you think the other artists who didn't succeed even though they made by YG, or artists who were not that big as much as bigbang is. Without bigbang's talent and hard working, there would be no success.

      • sheamingo

Doesn't YG produce some of their music? He must have some type of business sense if YG is one of the top 3 entertainment companies in SK. And I much prefer BB to have control over their music as much as they do now, than how SM/JYP artists are. Granted, I don't follow SM or JYP as much as YG, but YG artists seem to have more freedom. Also, YG's business sense is not the only thing that can make or break an artist, like you said they have to have talent and not only that the public has to be interested in what they are selling. Another thing, just because a group is talented, that is not going to make them popular i.e. Big Mama. There are groups in Kpop, IMO, that are not that great musically and they produce the same type of music all the time, yet they have a huge following. And no matter how popular you are, if something goes down, you are going to be attached by the media, fans, etc., that has nothing to do with YG's business sense. He can't cover for them all the time. A lot of the time the truth will come out no matter what, all he can do is support them when it does happen. In addition, if I am not mistaken, I think other entertainment companies have had disagreements with tv stations as well. Like I said, BB would not be where they are today if not for YG and I will add the same for YG, BB helped make YG as well. But don't make it seem like YG has not taken care of them and that they would be better off somewhere else because frankly, if they had to try to make it at another company, they would not be in the industry. They auditioned for YG because he didn't care about looks, do you really think they would have made it into SM or JYP?

You know guys this is better for BB actually..Because Samsung (& other sponsor company) is giving the money for BB to go on tour etc., instead of YG & BB members using their own money.

And BB going on tour is the next step for them..they can't stay in Korea forever. I mean just look at how successful their latest album without (1) spending on promotions (2) performing on music stations & spending money on stages (3) and promoting themselves on variety shows.
