Hyundai hopes to tap teens with YG [NEWS]

Posted by on June 6, 2012

Two leading trendsetting companies in Korea - Hyundai Card and YG Entertainment - unveiled the result of their brand management and marketing collaboration yesterday.

Under the deal, Hyundai is helping YG Entertainment spiff up its brand by providing its expertise in brand building and design. In return, YG is teaching the card company how to understand consumers in their teens and 20s.

Hyundai Card, an affiliate of Hyundai Motor Group, said in a release yesterday, the two companies had collaborated on an album cover and music video.

Hyundai has caused sensations in Korea by hosting high-profile pop concerts by artists such as Lady Gaga and Beyonce. Its innovative marketing campaigns, including TV commercials and advertising designs, elevated the company to the second tier of the country’s credit card market in a short period of time.

YG Entertainment, a leading management company for artists of the Hallyu, or Korean wave, has artists including Big Bang and 2NE1 in its stable. It is one of Korea’s top three pop artist management companies along with SM Entertainment and JYP Entertainment.

“An entertainment company and a credit card company have different approaches in terms of brand management and we wanted to help each other by sharing know-how,” a Hyundai spokesman said. “By learning how to understand consumers in their teens and 20s, we can expand our future customer bases.”

In their first collaboration, Hyundai Card designed Big Bang’s new album cover and produced a music video for the popular boy band’s album. The video, for a song entitled “Monster,” features fonts used by Hyundai Card in its marketing materials.

The song “Monster” recorded by lesser-known musicians will also be available for downloading at Hyundai Card Music, a music Web site. The card company will help the musicians build their reputations, it said.

“We are going to do more than share our expertise and will come up with valuable cultural content,” the spokesman said.

Advertising, always advertising... Are Big Bang artists or sandwich men?

    • dodo18

lmao you always crack me up ! what do you expect they are yg cash cow he need to get everything he can from them while they are at the top! i still don't understand this whole story neverless!

    • FUN

Shouldn't we actually be thankful that advertisers want them? It just means their popular and a lot people like them. It's where most of their money come from too :)

      • FUN

        *they're

      • NaToTheWak

And is it normal that they do more money from ad than from music? Is it normal that they produce about as many CFs as MVs? I thought they wanted to be recognize as musicians rather than cash makers!

        • FUN

Yup, it's pretty normal. Singers and athletes in the US make more from their endorsements than from what they really do.

        • GH2G1826

C'mon, they need the popularity so that people will be aware of their music.

        • Guest

i think the sequence has always been good music-recognition-advertising deals, it all wouldnt happen if they suddenly start making crap music and their popularity fades, so it all goes back to quality music imo...but either way since when has making money been a thing to be frowned upon? idk i'd have a problem if they were neglecting their music in the process, otherwise am kool!

        • IO

it is a mutual simbolism,, so i think it is okaaay

        • pitaz

I don't want name-calling but you sound stupid tbh.

        • NaToTheWak

@299819567b3f7da68676e26aa0df4570:disqus Thank you for you very constructive contribution! It sure makes you a smart person!

I have to admit there is someting wrong in my previous comment. I said "they produce about as many CFs as MVs", and a more recent article reports that, between June 5 2011 and June 5 2012, they made 24 CFs. 24 CFs against 4 MVs. 6 times more CFs than MVs. Yeah, they're at this level of commodification.

    • fonnie

Yes Big Bang are artists as they do make their own music. Yet they would need money and funds to promote it right? I guess Hyundai could help them in so many ways with that. Even with concert tours. I think it's harsh saying they are sandwich men, but remember bands in general don't last long in South Korea, so they need big brands to help maintain their popularity.
It's logical since Big Bang are going to be out of the country a lot doing their world tour, so this would help them maintain their popularity if you get what I mean.

      • Flory82

         U are s o right!
They need sponsors! For their concerts and for their promotions!
Let's not forget that Hyundai helped them with Monster Mv,which is the greatest mv from a kpop band!

And let's be honest they don't survive in this industry only with Vip's love!!!

    • juno_bug

Well, the article didn't say Big Bang will promote Hyundai Card or something like that, IMO. They said they share know-how in this collaboration. YG gave them know-how to approach teen customer. On the other hand, they gave new branding design for Big Bang and help making the Monster MV, which we love the most. And they use Big Bang Monster song for the Hyundai Card Music project. But of course, cmiiw :)

      • NaToTheWak

Know-how to sell stuff to teens? How praiseworthy! And if I saw well, Hyundai is mentionned on their last MV... So it's like promoting for them. And YG didn't need any car company to produce Love Song.

        • GH2G1826

Uhm, it's just normal to have Hyundai's name on their last MV. They helped in producing it. And can't you see the fact that they'll be both having benefits w/ this collab. This collab is just like a normal endorsement, but not normal. Uhm. How do I explain this O.O

But one thing I know for sure, Hyundai will help Big Bang in a lot of aspects. I think it's a bit harsh saying that they are just sandwich men. BB is pursuing international tours now, so a big brand company like Hyundai will give them a lot of help and benefit.

        • juno_bug

Seriously, what's wrong with help to promote people who help you, eh? Yeah, they did mention Hyundai in the MV which is normal because they helped them in making the video, but my point is that it's not like Big Bang will do special activity (so far, like to shoot an CF for them or something like that) just to promote them. So Big Bang DO got advantages from this collaboration (blockbuster MV and new brand-design) without stealing some of their nap time. Isn't it marvelous? :)

    • fantasticelastic

YG needs the money. How else are they going to continue hosting such big scale concerts with Live Nation? Actually holding a world tour is pretty expensive/risky and SM town just started to make profits from American stops this year (and the tickets were crazy expensive). That's why it's good that they get more advertising deals rn and even better if companies sponsor part of their world tour like Jeju Air. It means cheaper tickets for us and more money for Big Bang!

  • http://www.bigbangupdates.com/ VIP4Daesung

New commercials...ideas....high-profile concerts....OH...I am interested....wonder where this will go in the future...Just hope Big Bang (yet again) can find time to rest!

  • juno_bug

Well, I get it now, thank you for the explanation :) This is a good collaboration, IMHO, because this company actually help Big Bang to create a great image with the new-branding project and the fabulous Monster MV of course :)

  • Anon_26

  • Maharani09

Aaahh sorry I have to write some sort of irrelevant comment on this, because I want to write it in other article but it's deleted already >..<* I hope someone knows what I'm talking about here hehe :) But please correct me if I'm wrong ^^

(FYI the deleted post is similar with this http://entertainment.xin.msn.com/en/hallyu/storyviewer.aspx?cp-documentid=250220440)

    • Porfirea

Why they deleted that News that BIG BANG is #10 on iTunes USA and #10 on iTunes Canada?

      • Maharani09

Maybe because it's causing some confusions :) I can only say that the #10 spots on iTunes US and Canada are more likely different things with the #30 spot they got in Top 100 iTunes Album Charts.

I hope one of some BBU admins read this :)

    • April

I remember BB took spots in TOP 100 itunes chart several times and ranked at maybe #6 there.

      • Maharani09

I think that would be the ones in Top 10 US charts. But I don't know... as far as I remember I only knew that they ranked high in Top 10 iTunes charts (in many countries). Like Alive Album charts: http://www.bigbangupdates.com/2012/02/big-bangs-alive-on-itunes-charts.html

But yes, please correct me if I'm wrong (and it's better to have an article about the previous spot BB took in Top 100 if they really did, to clear out this confusion heheh) :)

        • April

No, TOP 10 charts're the charts without EXPLICIT albums, so we usually don't refer to the TOP 10 charts. I'm sure BB took spots in TOP 100 charts and ranked at #6 or #7 or #8 twice, I can't remember exactly... But I'm sure of that :)

        • April
          • Maharani09

Aaaah I just see it now! Well this is clear enough! Thank you so much April ^^

  • HanaVIP

I wish they really can help bigbang to reach more, not just use them for their promotions.. but i'm proud though because they're seen as the lead of hallyu :)
Just don't forget to get rest boys :)

  • soluiz

Oh. I thought hyundai as in the car brand. There is a jeep at the start of the MV so I assumed they advertised one measly car for that few seconds lol

    • linunrata

Hyundai is famous for producing cars but it has lots of different affiliates in Korea. You see Hyundai  brand everywhere in Korea from  department stores to hotels....not only as a car brand.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=712604163 Andy Tjhin

for some reason i feel strange with HYUNDAI collaboration with YG ARTIST...

  • Akiumie

If it benefits Big Bang im all for it!

Wonders if it means Big Bang will have their own specialized cards though.. :D

  • asdfseungri

oh then there will be more mvs like monster mv in the futur? *___*

  • DAEDAERI

it's okay if it can makes more money to our boys ! as long as YG shares their dividen equally!

theres no need of monkey business and steals our boys money... fighting bigbang!

  • CAM

I really don't understand it... WTH is Hyunday card? :S

    • linunrata

I think it is a credit card....

  • http://twitter.com/Rosequartzzz Joyce

YG please teach the card company how to understand Vips of all ages and genders...hehe
i really like how they promoting monster and encouraging the musicians to show off their talent..

  • Japinha

They all look so good!! *_____* (I want Seungri's jacket!!)

  • linunrata

I think this is a very good thing... IMO, Hyundai will promote/sponsor Big Bang  as a "brand" (responsible for marketing this valuable brand) and in return they will get more young people as their customers for their products (example: more young membership for the credit card...)

Sounds quite profitable for both sides -of course if our boys get a good and fair share.

  • XBIGBANGX

I just hope YG let the boys have some rest ! the boys look very tired , especially during the Hyundai press conference :(

  • GTatsu

:) Oh A great cooperation! When I heard about MV Moster I wondered why papa Yang spent lots of money for this MV =)) And Hyundai is my answer!

  • Porfirea

Why they removed a news that BIG BANG - Alive (Special Edition) is #10 on iTunes USA AND #10 on iTunes Canada???

  • Genlisa

not sure why everyone's so miffed with the branding issue.
it comes with the stride, man.

it's essential in the music industry to strengthen your brand, especially now that they're going global this year. making a fuss about their endorsements and brand collaborations more than they sing is unrealistic. as far as i can see, they've been on stage for music shows and live shows this half of the year, two times more than they did last year.

    just keeping the facts simple.
YG isn't sucking out the diamonds from Big Bang.
these brothers won't be so blindly stupid not to know what's needed to bring forth a WORLD TOUR to reality. and at least, give credit to Sean and the Planning and Production Team, please. Big Bang may well take their pick in these endorsements just as much as Sean, Jinu and YG suggests all the options to them. as far as i know, these guys know when and why they should speak their mind and compromise deals after five years together. even Seungri himself caught a marketing deal in Japan for his hyungs....and, of all people i bet Seungri understands the importance of business, marketing and endorsements more than the others.

imagine it this way. without branding, collaborations, partnerships and endorsing of the right products, would we be in the right mind to expect ourselves to see these brothers in their ALIVE World Tour in our cities this year?

    i trust Big Bang.
and i know well, after what happened last year...these five brothers know exactly what they're doing.

    • GH2G1826

If only I can like this comment a thousand times, I would.

      • Genlisa

        thanks.

they may sound mature speaking with such implausible concern. but that maturity is just a two step front to speak like an adult. they should try thinking thirty or fifty steps further. and they'll see the bigger picture and the complexities involved.

        a protest is necessary.
        but with sound judgement.

i will only protest if YG goes senile and Big Bang ends up endorsing a total offshoot of their own already strong global brand...
like ladies' tampons or menstrual pads, maybe.

ugh. yes. that i will seriously protest.

  • BBVIPMONSTER

it's back again about business and promotion thingy

  • TinaVIP_GDYB

Everytime I see pictures of GD at this event I can't get over how hot he looks! Anyways, BB seems to have a lot of things going on, world tour now this Hyundai thing. I hope they don't overwork themselves. It's a lot to do, they need their rest too

  • HaniIdayu

it is a great collaboration. YG and Big Bang have made a good decision so far.

  • https://twitter.com/#!/elanieyzww blackvip

i didn't understand the article at all. all i understand is the collab will bring out huge impact/benefits since both Bigbang and Hyundai are big brand in their own field

  • BBISVIP

i just hope that the boys really enjoying whatever they do and get enough of rest time

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1471093833 Amilya Phoeung

This is sounding like a very good collaboration (:

They made a great deal with Hyundai Cards, and I believe both sides will be rewarded.

  • Milzu

this means money! they have so much stuff going on in this year :o

  • Tiffany

oh, i thought hyundai card was a car company...lol it's a credit card company. man, hyundai has everything! haha

  • http://twitter.com/adri_adrienne ♛Adriana 아드리아나♛

Hyundai couldn't have chosen better, if you make strategic alliance with BB you'll have the best !

  • Nerdie_breet

from what I can understand, Hyundai want to venture in to the entertainment industry, thus they seek YG to help them. YG gains in this are Hyundai will help them to "rebranding"? I don't understand in what sense the rebranding is, is it they want to rebuilt YG image and make them a stronger image that can sell just by their image only? ....ok, I'm starting to get confused myself...
w/e it is, both gain something in this collaboration. and the indie band that will win this get something big too :)

  • palebluedot13

People must not understand advertising and marketing. Branding is crucial to that sort of idea. And a good branding can lead to greater recognition from the public and higher sales.

  • keepcalmandVIP

i dont know why youre complaining about advertising.... i mean lets face it you can't get anywhere big in our society without advertisers..

  • SOLvip

0.0....the title of the article lol sorry I just had to say it

  • TiOPcito

I'm interes in the re-monster project! But I think too that they do a lot of advertising...

  • http://twitter.com/jepah89 J.E.P.A.H

so its a win win situation here..YG able to strengthen their brands which is their artist while Hyundai can learn more how to get attention of teen costumers to use their card..for the conclusion its a give and get and all bout business..close enough i guess..hehehe

  • elahehsadegh

this collaboration is beneficial for both side.Bigbang can release marvelous M/Vs and Hyundai can reach to teens and 20s market.
I think in music industry it's good and actually it's necessary till it doesn't turn to just press conference and ADs.As now, they should use them in a way artist enjoy being involved.

  • http://twitter.com/tannieforever Tanya

Advertising gives them more exposure, it's all good.

  • Angel

LOL "Hyundai hopes to tap teens with YG"  that sounded wrong to me when i first read it.... ._.

  • Flo

Very smart partnership, in my opinion. I think that YG is really wise for splitting the costs for their Monster MV to have that extra blockbuster feel to it. Such a smart boss.
