G-Dragon avoids marijuana smoking charges [NEWS]

A member of the popular boy band Big Bang has been found to have illegally smoked marijuana but was released without an indictment because he smoked only a tiny amount, prosecutors said Wednesday.

G-Dragon, 23, the leader of the five-member boy band had his indictment suspended by the Seoul Central District Prosecutors'Office after being questioned by prosecutors on charges of smoking marijuana.

During a recent interrogation, the singer whose real name is Kwon Ji-yong admitted to having smoked marijuana at a club in Japan in May while he was on a performance trip, according to the prosecutors.

The prosecution's test of Kwon's hair in July verified his use of the banned drug, the prosecutors added.

"I smoked a cigarette, which a random Japanese guy gave to me in a Japanese club. I suspected it to be marijuana since it smelled different, but I smoked it anyway," G-Dragon was quoted by the prosecutors as saying during the interrogation.

Given that the singer inhaled just a small amount and prosecutors detected only a meager level of marijuana components in the singer's body, the prosecution did not indict him, they said.

G-Dragon's expression of remorse and confession also helped him avoid an indictment that would lead to a court trial, the prosecution noted.

Under South Korean law, marijuana users can be sentenced to a maximum of five years in jail or fined up to 50 million won ($42,000).

G-Dragon caught smoking marijuana but gets off with a suspension of indictment

It has been revealed that Big Bang’s G-Dragon had been investigated by the prosecutors’ office of Korea for allegedly smoking marijuana.

Seoul central prosecutors’ office, violent criminal division’s chief prosecutor has stated, “We decided to rule suspension of indictment on behalf of G-Dragon for him breaking the drug law.” According to the prosecutors’ office G-Dragon has smoked marijuana in Japan back in May and he was tested positive for a drug test done in July.

A spokesperson for the prosecutors’ office stated:

“G-Dragon was given a cigarette in a club in Japan from an individual who he didn’t even know the name. He said it smelled different from the regular cigarettes and he suspected it of being marijuana, but that he did smoke a little anyway.

G-Dragon is not a regular smoker of marijuana and this is his first time smoking it. Also, the amount of it he had in his system was too small to lawfully rule it a positive drug test. We have considered the fact that he is only a college student and therefore have ruled suspension of indictment on his behalf.”

By receiving a suspension of indictment the crimes go under your records, but for considerations of age, the severity of crime, and behavior after the fact, you do not get prosecuted.

    good for GD for owing up! i'm not worried about him in THIS case, cuz i get it. he got curious. and it's not like he went there and got a pack of it for himself. it was just curiosity, and he feels bad about it. what i AM worried about is that i hope he won't get curious again and be like "oh, let's just a little more" and so begins an addiction =(
    i hope endorsement deals, broadcast companies will understand too...

    i cried... im a fan of GD but then.. there's a pinch of reality bite that he's a normal person who made mistakes when he's young.. just like me. i did try everything when i was in college because of curiosity and influence of friends but then on.. i realized there's no good effect on your life and will make you more awful during studies.. :(,, anyhow.. im sad that my NUMBER ONE IDOL. did violate some minor crime.. and it really hurts so bad... why jiyongiee? :((

    For me, even the persecutors suspended him, i still understand.., Drugs is a different word when you discuss it. It is almost a crime.. especially in east asia countries. So the YG company should deal with it.

    I'm disappointed that some VIPs lost all respect for Kwon Ji Yong. That basically means you don't like Big Bang as much as you say you do. Did you not read the article? It was an incident and his first time smoking it. If you read the Korean article where he explains fully, you would understand. He flushed it down the toilet after he had noticed it was marijuana. It's not like he smoked it the whole night through and continued to do it daily.

    I don't think Kwon Ji Yong is that stupid. I think he is smart enough to know that if he did crap like that he could destroy his image as an Idol. Not only that but his career, dream and life. I mean come on Kwon Ji Yong confessed, regretted and had remorse about the incident. He knew it was wrong and that he should have been more careful. 

    Some VIPs you guys are. Freaking Eminem destroyed his image completely, and he knew what he was doing. He took time off, and look at him now. He is doing a lot better. Eminem had it harder than Kwon Ji Yong, not to mention he was actually aware and addicted to the stuff he did. What happened? His fans stayed loyal to Eminem. Maybe not viewing him as a person, but as one of the greatest rappers out there. 

    I understand South Korea has their beliefs and their culture. That's a different story. Here, I am talking about the International VIPs. If your an VIP from the United States and your saying Kwon Ji Yong is a load of junk, your wrong. American artists are way worse than this incident Kwon Ji Yong had. I know this, I live in the United States. Artist here are always down in the ditches, I read about it all the time. 

    I will always support Kwon Ji Yong. He is an amazing leader, lyricist, producer, and artist in South Korea, in my opinion. That respect for him will never go away. Yeah, I feel a bit bad about this incident, but it's not my business and he knows what he is doing. By the way, I am not Kwon Ji Yong bias.

    um..can someone explain, why all sudden he got investigated? did he get caught in the club?I understand police do regular check up in clubs but they only check up if you look suspicious. honestly, u still looks the same after two to three puff. on the other hand if you look way off (stone) then they will ask you to get tested.....

     seriously, this case is a bit dodgy.     A part of me does feel a bit disappointed with this news. I ain't gonna lie about that. A part of me says that GD should know better to not accept anything like that from a stranger.

    But then again, another part of me says that everyone makes mistakes like this once or twice in their lifetime or even maybe more. GD is just a mere human being, just like each and every one of us. Just cause he's a celebrity, it does not mean that he's perfect and that he does not make any mistakes. Just cause he's a celebrity, people are making a big fuss off of this problem, maybe even way too much of a fuss. Poor GD.

    But I hope GD would learn from his mistake and reflect on himself, which I'm sure he will. But this case won't make me love GD any less. I will still love him and his music. No matter what, he's still as talented and I still respect him as an artist. I hope other vIPs won't turn their backs away from him or Big Bang. You wouldn't do such things, right guys? :)

    hair tests are actually more accurate because it has something to do with the blood stream. in fact it can test positive even if you took drugs like a month or two prior. whereas urine tests may show negative results even if the person has smoked weed before..

    hahas. it's not about the particles from weed getting stuck in your hair x)

    Why would they charge him (though the indictment was suspended) for something he did outside Korea??? Are Korean criminal charges go by territory or nationality? Anyone who knows Korean law can answer?

    Anyways, aside from that hooha, I'm surprised they did a drug test for GD. Why did he went under it anyway?

    Lastly, I actually don't mind if he did that. It's not like he's a drug addict or something. =S Sad though he got caught.

    I think its ok smoking marijuana but you should keep it on the down low. Marijuana gives lots of creative juice(i'm a beatboxer, it makes me creative and come up with different beats) and im not disappointed when i see this piece of news as i've always suspected him being a smoker seeing his bloodshot eyes in knock out MV.

    the only thing we can do is to hope that it doesn't affect him much, career/health (regardless of his other habits) I really hope that he takes care of himself..  especially when he's famous in some way, and there are actually people who wants to take him down! If anything's suspicious (even SLIGHTLY), especially when it's from strangers, don't try it Jiyong shi! (Have your own private cigarettes if you really need to smoke!) Curiosity isn't everything, it's not like we should say 'it's okay, we expect this to happen' right? Scandals are unavoidable and GD wouldn't be flawless but of course we want to see good headlines about him and know that he's fine overall!

    the good news? he's not being indicted (at least not right now). the problem is the social aftermath really. if it was in some other country, smoking weed may not be such a big deal but drug use scandals are major in Korea. apparently Korean netizens are already tearing him apart. in addition to the fact that his own statement is clearly an excuse (in the least), i highly doubt they are gonna let him off easy.

    in addition to Daesung's issue... what does the future bode for BIGBANG? i'm a VIP all the way. but... damn, GD, stop messing up.

    see for me is not that big of a deal, i don't like it, but you know whatever we make mistakes, we learn, we move on....and please please we do't do it again, even if it is his life and choice, drugs are bad!!!

    but when i first read the news it made me cry...because i just want them to be able to be happy, promote as fast as they can so i can see my five loves again!
    and by what i've seen, i hate for people to look down on him, and bigbang, and the company, and i refuse to accept that people will turn their backs on my loves over this!

    Curiosity is a normal characteristic as a human. It doesn't always lead
    us to the right way, but ppl make mistakes...& that is a fact. It's how we carry on from the mistakes that makes our character.
    GD isn't exactly the most innocent scandal free "idol" out there, but this news doesn't make him the worst person either.
    My only concern is his health in all aspects, cuz we all know how brutal things get over there with the antis and what not.

    This is BS. MJ only stays in your system for around 10 days plus he only smoked a bit of it but who knows right? Anyways depending on your lifestyle it can shorter or longer. And with GD's constant movement ie: concerts MJ should not have been detected at all after almost 2 months.

    I smell underhanded tactics here. To those who don't get it I smell under the table deals involving money. >> Why investigate after two months? They should have all been tested the minute they stepped back on Korean soil. There is something srsly wrong here.

    I actually believed in him. I went to many heavily drink parties and clubs. The smell of weed is not detectable when there are alcohol and cigarettes present, not to mention sweat and perfume/colonel smells are everywhere.

    I also agreed with many people here. I don't see what's the big deal of this when alcohol and cigarettes killed many people a year when marijuana brought no harm.

    What even more unbelievable is someone sold GD out, there is no way Seoul polices could had know about this unless someone told about it. Not alone the laughable of them "almost" charged him a crime that he committed in another country.

    I really hate weed and how it's so accepted here in America, so I can't speak negatively against Korea's tougher stance.  But GD :( stoppp...just smoke cigarettes~  We don't want you to get in trouble--  and weed smells disgusting too..  so repulsive :/  even the hotness of GD suffers a little bit..

    if this was another  idol and country, then fans would easily brush it
    off. but the fact that its korea and the leader of a very well known
    idol group, big bang will be attacked and criticized like no other. even
    though gd has every reason as a human being to do what he pleases, its

    I don't tolerate drugs. nor smoking or too much drinking. but we have to admit people do get curious. it was a lapse of judgment on his part but it's not like he was caught being addicted to it. 

     it was wrong but he is just a person who makes mistakes. the only difference is he is a celebrity and the media will sensationalize it and he is more prone to more criticisms from the public.

    and quite honestly, i'm not surprised. he is a rebel. with how sociable he is, and how frequently he goes out, it would be a miracle if he hadn't tried any of it. *shrugs*

    i'm not making a big deal out of it, as long as this is as far as it goes. i cannot say the same for the netizens. this is a straight way ticket for haters to hate him more.

    Ok I have had enough of this! I was ok with the smoking, drinking, clubbing and the girls but this is just too much!! WTF, is he that stupid!!! I always was kinda suspicious that he had at least tried some drugs but common! He should be more careful! He is the biggest idol in Korea, many children (teenagers) look at him as their rolemodel and for god sake he is 23 year old!!! He should be more mature and careful!!     My take on this..

    Well, I still stand on what I believe. Like I always stated to my circle of friends, I don't even care what Bigbang member does in their free time. I don't care if TOP or GD or Seungri or Daesung or Taeyang has a GF or even engaged; I don't really care whether GD/TOP smoke or not; I don't care that they might be an alcoholic, I love their music, arts and works not their personal live. So, YES. I don't care if GD do smoke marijuana or whatever on that matter. But I think i lost my respect on him even if it just a wee bit. But that's never mean I love him/Bigbang less. I still support him, not defend him, but stand behind him when he fall and ready to catch and raise him back on his feet. :)
    (or maybe catch him and put him on my room, whichever works. :p)

    I guess my only question is, what lead to the drug testing? That's the one piece missing in the report. Was it a routine drug testing that YGE does to its artists or something that led to this filing of the report and stuff? Cos if YGE is doing random drug testing on its artists that speaks a lot of YGE.

    fuck fuck!! I got hypertension again with this headlines and my heart is beating so fast!!! But he should've not tried it in the first place, that's why smokers like him find it hard to quit..never start vices when you know you'll be addicted to it!!!     I am not surprised that something like this would happen. We all know that in the entertainment world, drugs, cigarettes, sex, and money are hugely part of it. What you do, given that these things exist in entertainment, is totally up to you. You can give in, or totally reject some, if not all of it. GD made I choice. He knew all along that it was marijuana. But he chose to accept it and that's the painful part. However, I don't blame him. Sometimes, we all have moments of weakness. I just hope that, that moment of weakness will not be repeated.
